The towing capacity for the V40 is 1200kg for the D2, 1300kg for the T2 and 1500kg for all the other engines,
The advice from the Caravan Club is that for safety the laden weight of the caravan should not exceed 85% of the vehicle's minimum kerb weight (the worst case scenario - a fully laden trailer and an empty car), which for the current version of the V40 are:
T2 Manual 1546kg/Auto 1554kg
T3 Manual 1563kg/Auto 1554kg
T5 Auto 1582kg
This is only a guideline from the Caravan Club, and not a legal requirement, For that, you have to look at hat the DVLA says about your driving licence.
If you passed your car driving test before 01/01/97 you are allowed to drive a vehicle and combination of up to 8250kg Maximum Authorised Mass (i.e the vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight plus the weight of the trailer and load)
If you passed your test after 01/01/97 you can tow a small trailer of up to 750kg laden weight, or a heavier trailer if the weight of the vehicle and trailer combination does not exceed 3500kg MAM.
The Maximum Authorised Mass the V40 models are:
From these figures, if Volvo's maximum towing weight limit for each model is adhered to you should be ok legally even with a post 01/01/97 licence except in the D4, where you would be 5kg over the 3500kg Maximum Allowed Mass limit...
