Hi everyone, in a bit of a panic and hoping someone can give me a little bit of direction as I’m hopeless with cars above and beyond knowing that they need servicing regularly etc, so I apologise massively for any lack of technical explanation or waffle.

Unsure if important but it’s the 1.6d engine.

Recently, on a couple of occasions, both the DSTC and ESSR errors have come up on the dash of my 2013 D2 R Design after driving ~20 miles on a journey. When this happens the car goes into a chugging (think the sort of vibrations a car would demonstrate driving over a cattle grid gently) limp mode where the revs will not exceed 2k and the top speed is about 38mph. Stopping the engine and starting it again cleared the error and the issue went away.

I had it checked at a local garage and their software couldn’t find a specific fault and their best guess was a dodgy sensor (and in their defence didn’t charge me and advised to go to a specific local garage that specialises in Swedish cars which has been booked but due to being busy doesn’t go in until next week). But they cleared the error and it hadn’t returned until today. Unfortunately now, this double issue returned on my commute today. However where stopping the engine and restarting it previously cleared the errors and also cleared the limp mode, the car seems to now be stuck in the limp mode.

The long and short of that is it’s stuck in my work’s multi storey car park and obviously I’m worried about driving home in limp mode (30 miles unfortunately) and being a danger to other road users and the car itself.

My questions are essentially - is there any way of bypassing this error as a lay person, to allow it to be temporarily put back into a state that I could drive back home at a normal speed - and - does what I’ve described give any hint as to what it might be and could it potentially be fixed in situ. I’ve Googled this as extensively as I could and the best I found was a battery disconnect but v paranoid about doing that as it’s a start stop battery.

It’s already booked in for next week at the local Volvo specialists, so I’m not trying to be a scab and avoid paying for a proper fix, it’s just that the car is stuck in a place that would be desperately awkward to get a recovery vehicle into and as things stand it would need a double recovery to get it towed home and then towed to the mechanics. So if there was a way to tell the car to ignore the error / I could disconnect something / hidden sequence of button presses to clear the issue then this would be perfect.

Obviously if it’s knackered then it’s knackered and I don’t have many options other than getting GreenFlag out.

Any help would be incredibly gratefully received. If anyone does have any questions I’ll do my best to explain. Really sorry to have to start a thread on here as I know it’s a pain the arse but I genuinely have no ideas where else to ask.

Cheers and all the best, Dan

sometimes its worth disconnecting the battery, but with the symptoms described I dont think that would help. A little knowledge is dangerous as they say, but if it's a 1.6 D I feel it's a fuelling issue, likely caused by an injector

Thank you for taking the time to reply. One of the few posts about it suggested an injector issue but was crossing my fingers that wouldn’t be it as it’s one of the more expensive fixes.

I would doubt I’d even have the skill required to disconnect the battery and successfully re-connect it so I’m rather glad it’s not a definite fix!

Seriously though thanks for your input. I appreciate it.

Just giving this one final bump and then I’ll leave it. Car still stuck in works’ car park sadly and terrified of moving it. Cheers to anyone who’s read the post.

If it starts and runs even though lumpy and not on all 4, you'd be ok to shift it out of the car park for recovery. I "limped" mine into the garage early one morning before any traffic, shoved the key through their letterbox. Hope you find a resolution

I had this about 18 months ago whilst driving on the motorway. It resulted in me having to get recovered, as one of the injectors had gone. New injector and the car was back to normal.
Yep, I experienced exactly the same. Then another (different) one failed.

Cheers for the additional replies. Managed to get it home from London to the Chilterns via the most insane, inefficient route ever which avoided every A road, road with speeds above 50 mph and only on roads with not steep hills. This nearly came a cropper at Denham where the hill was so steep that the car kept stalling but got it home in the end.

Left home on the train to pick it up at 9am, got back at 4pm. This round trip would normally take about 2hrs. Tempted just to set the b*gger on fire tbh 😂
