Alarm Sounding, Bonnet Catch Or Battery ??

280 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Tony1
The alarm on my 2016 R Design has started to intermittently sound.
I've read that it could be the switch on the bonnet catch or possibly the main battery having low voltage ?

I'm in a bit of a dilemma because I do very little mileage and do on occasion have the low battery charge message, but I not seen this for a little while, so I'm not really sure the battery is causing the alarm to sound, so that leaves me thinking it could be the switch the bonnet catch, even though I'm not seeing the warning to say the bonnet is open, however, what I'm seeing after the alarm sounds on the electronic dash display is the whole of the bonnet lit up in red, and also a red triangle on the dash.
I've also noticed that the mirror indicators do not flash when locking the car, the other indicators still flash when locking, usually all indicators flash on locking and opening.

Any advice appreciated.

i'd imagine if a bonnet switch was faulty, that may explain the dash warning and odd alarm behaviour...
my mum has an Astra which hasn't moved in 12 mths other than to the MOT test, and that kept sounding until the battery was recharged
If you have an indication that the bonnet is open, then I would hazard a guess that is where the problem lies.
The red bonnet indicator IS the warning that it is open (along with the red triangle)
If you scroll through the messages, only then do you see the warning that the bonnet is open in the text display.

A secondary effect is that the battery will be drained because the alarm is sounding.
Thanks for your replies.
The red bonnet display only appears if the the alarm activates, it doesn't show otherwise.
Its odd because the car could be sitting unused for a day or two and all of a sudden the alarm will go off and the red bonnet is displayed on the dash alongside the red triangle .
If I had been opening the bonnet and then it went off after closing and locking up the car I could understand that the bonnet catch with might be faulty , but to go off and show the red bonnet display when the car hasn't been used is a bit of an odd one ?
I suspect that the car is indicating that the source of the alarm is the bonnet switch, i.e. it believes that an attempt has been made to open the bonnet. whether that is an issue with the bonnet switch, wiring or the alarm module would have to be investigated. The fact that the car isn't routinely reporting the bonnet open would, I would have thought, tend to rule out the switch. Not certain though/

The switch is faulty or sticky, there are a few threads on here about how people fixed it.
