Hi,

I'm looking to order a v40 as a company car in a d4 manual. Has anyone driven one. What did you think? I ask because a lot of the write ups say it has a lumpy power delivery and I am not sure if I believe it. I need to get my order in soon and I've driven a d2 and liked it very much, but no one seems to have a d3 or d4 demonstrator. What's the manual like as well? I'm told its like the v60s long throw, not the snappy gearbox in the v40 d2.

I've driven the d4 in an auto box... Its my choice of engine! Very smooth, powerfull. Coming from a petrol history I'm happy to make the change. 5 cylinder, nice sound..

Although any private buyers I would reccomend getting the d3 and tuning up, same engine but essentially a 'restricted' d4. Hope this helps.

Hi Rich, I test drove a D4 and a D3 manual back in July at one of the Volvo V40 events. Whilst I can't claim that everything is fresh in my mind given how long ago it was, I was impressed enough with the overall package to order one.

Power delivery band may have been a little narrow, which may be why some are claiming it's lumpy, but in my opinion it was still smooth and did not detract from the experience - The engine has great torque and was fun.
For me, the drive was more enjoyable than in the D3, and I even returned a better fuel efficiency on the identical test route. The test drive did convince me however to drop the sports pack and the 18" wheels in favour of 17" - the ride was much improved.
