Hey. As the title reads, my infotainment screen is black, flashes slightly and has stopped working along with the dashboard displaying "BLIS and CTA service required". Air conditioning and buttons still work though.

I left the car at the mechanic shop and they checked fuses and told me something was probably wrong with the "central control module" but they were still unsure and referred me to a Volvo workshop which told me the replacement of the infotainment screen along with software would cost €1100.

As a student and this car (2013 Volvo V40 D2) being my first I can not afford this expensive fix to replace the screen which might not even be the problem to begin with. I am therefore wondering if anyone has had the same problem and been able to fix it? Thanks in advance!

There are a few threads about blanks screens, you can see one here

Removing and replacing the fuse in the control box under one of the seats has fixed the issue for some.

Unfortunately on modern cars with networked communication systems via numerous control modules, identifying a fault is rather like looking for a needle in a haystack without diagnostic assistance. The Volvo dealer is almost certain to have investigated the fault codes logged in the control modules, from which a likely component and possible issues should be identified for further investigation. Some fault codes might point to possible problems in a number of areas, that need further investigation, others might simply confirm that a module is dead and beyond repair.

Unfortunately, main dealers have a reputation for swapping components at customer expense until they either fix the fault or run out of ideas. They tend not to investigate and dismantle to any extent these days, but if they did, at £100 plus per hour for labour, you can probably appreciate that it wouldn't take long to surpass the cost of a replacement ICM. But I would want the dealer's confirmation in writing that a replacement ICM will resolve the problem and will only be chargeable on a successful repair first - although I suspect you would be very unlikely to get that.

Your other options are an independent Volvo specialist, or obtaining your own diagnostic equipment to read and interpret the fault. As it will need to be able to interrogate the ICM and other non-engine and drivetrain related systems, it will need to be a Volvo specific all-systems reader, and they are not particularly cheap. You might be able to replace your ICM and/or screen with a known working system from a donor car, but I believe that would require the MOST security system on your car to be disabled, otherwise a unit previously programmed into a different vehicle won't work at all. If you choose to go down that route, a VDash Pro or Verified dealer is likely to be your best option. As you can see from the link, there are not many in the UK, but it may be worth talking to Matt Leavesley (the red marker on the map) who is one of the most knowledgeable people around and can certainly give you better guidance than me, if not help with any possible repair.

Hey. Sorry for the late reply. I would like to make an update. I found a repair shop who replaced the entire ICM unit for about 500 Euros. The problem now is that when connecting it with both cables behind, it shuts off after a couple of seconds. However, when only connecting one of the cables, the AC controls work on the screen, but there is no audio and my reversing camera does not work either.

The mechanic who replaced the ICM told me he was unable to fix it and did not know what was causing this issue. I suspect it must be the MOST lock you were talking about that shuts the unit off as a safety mechanism. Do you know if VDASH works when it comes to disabling the MOST lock? And can you get a cheaper cable than the VIDA DICE which is around 1000 Euros? I am located in Sweden, by the way, so I have no access to dealers in the UK.

I bought mine from either eBay or Amazon, I can't remember which now, for around 80 UKP and it is fine, but I'm not sure they are still available on those sites, as Volvo have been going really hard at shutting down or stopping unauthorised advertisements, uses of their name and logo etc. in the last couple of years.

But having said that, if VDash can disable the MOST system (ISTR it can) it will be a facility reserved for Pro subscribers now, which means you won't need a DiCE because you will either have to find a Pro dealer via the VDash website who can help you, or ask a Volvo dealer to do it. Buying your own DiCE and a Verified Pro account for VDash (400 euros minimum) would simply not be cost effective for those purposes, unless you were setting up a business working on other cars for which you could charge the owners to cover your costs.

I've just seen a recent message saying that a UK Volvo dealer charged £60 to apply the update to a car this month (February) so by far cheaper than acquiring a DiCE etc, and as I say it appears that if you had the tools you still couldn't disable MOST on a V40 by yourself.

Wow, this information is very useful. You just saved me from wasting money on a battery charger and VIDA DICE cable. Thank you very much! Will ask the dealer if they are able to do this. Original quote was 1100 Euros for ICM replacement and "programming". Just hoping to have the final cost be below this ridiculous amount.

It's on the Volvo Vida Dice and VDash Owners Group on Facebook. You'll need to apply for membership and then search the group for "MOST" or "ITP". It's just a single sentence from someone saying that a Volvo dealer applied it to their car for £60. The post was earlier this month.
