I've got a week old V40 CC with manual gearbox and D4 engine with less than 1000 miles on the clock. About 4 times over the past week, I've had a strong burning smell coming through the interior vents. On one occasion it was on a steep uphill start and I thought it was the clutch ( i'm still getting used to the long clutch travel!). But on at least 2 other occasions it's just been high revs on a nominal incline and i'm pretty sure then that my clutch control was fine. Any thoughts what the smell could be? Diesel?

Can't say I've experienced it, But I'm pretty sure I've seen other threads about this too - probably worth doing a search.

I think it was something about a chemical used during production burning off exhaust components or something.

Ok, thanks. There doesn't seem to be anything untoward happening (other than the occasional smell). I'll see how I go with it ( Otherwise, am absolutely loving the car!!)

Have you got a V40 with a diesel particulate filter? Occasional my car has got such kind of chemical smelling. My dealer told me that this is the dpf.

It may be the protective coating on the exhaust. When the engine gets hot it smells, this completely goes after about 3000 miles.
