I've had the exact same question as the thread originator (denn1s) and ended up here finding the answer.
Btw. I've also come across this article https://goo.gl/riSphe on the Volvo V40 Online Manual, which seems to be self-explanatory.
You don't. I take mine to the local and supply my own oil and watch it getting poured in and reclaim the oil container with what is left.
On the reliability of the electronic gauge it is useless. I have underfilled and overfilled with the gauge never showing other than Max OK. Had this confirmed by VIDA and are in a running battle with Volvo to get it accepted that the system is crap and needs fixing. I will shortly get the car underfilled again immediately take it to the dealer for VIDA confirmation (again) and resume the battle. This is clearly a very hot potato and has world wide implications for all drive-e so they obfuscate. brissim is correct in his observation about the US market and the whole issue was discussed at a world conference last year in Gothenburg. Good luck to anyone getting an answer. Please post if you do.
