Hi
Have just joined 'volvo v40 club' and found a question re noise from steering.
I have found that my new to me V40 has a similar problem when after a cold start and turning right out of my driveway. It also creaks when rocking steering wheel side to side before I move away. Once I move away down the road the fault disappears. It is only there when cold.
Did anyone eventually find a cause.

I've only just started seeing this in the winter months. Had the car for over two years and this is the first winter I noticed it, especially on cold mornings/nights while I manoeuvre the car out of the car park. It is especially audible for the first few minutes until the heating has kicked in, so I am thinking it could be something to do with the plastics rubbing perhaps. Will check with my local on it's next visit for MOT.

Mine does this too and it's the reason I first searched this forum. I will be following this with interest to see what your garage comes up with. I've had it looked at by 3 so far - first said it was corrosion on brakes, second said it was dry suspension bushes and the latest thought it was probably the front suspension itself. I've since had brake discs and pads replaced and got the bushes thoroughly greased. I haven't had the suspension replaced as both front springs are less then 3 years old and are very expensive!

Will post response of dealership.
My car is a v40 crosscountry 2019 with just 9.000 miles so wear of components are not necessarily the cause.
Strange that it only happens when cold start in the morning.

Have visited Volvo dealer and was offered an explanation to the creaking noises
The techs opinion was that the possible cause is the rubber bush/mounting, on top of the suspension strut, due to stiffening by the cold temp is rubbing against the mounting rather than being pliable and absorbing any movement on the metal. Car is booked in to have rubbers replaced in 2 weeks time, will report back with findings..Brian

Thank you - it would be amazing if the fix were that simple! Would also explain why it's intermittent, though I have to say I haven't noticed it happening more on colder days - I'll be listening out this week.

No fault found, and too be fair we have not had cold weather since reporting the fault to the dealership.
Creak is still apparent but not pronounced, so we are no wiser than before.

Thanks for the update - shame they couldn't find anything. I've started to wonder whether the steering systems in these cars are just noisy; I assume they share common parts with the Focus and a colleague tells me his has always had a creak.

Hope you still get updates about this thread - my car is with a volvo specialist today for a service and they say that a suspension bearing and the assembly holding it needs replacing. Will see how it goes, collecting the car tomorrow.
