I have the R-Design version (2013) with xenon headlights. When the light switch is on automatic, during the daytime the main beams are turned on, and what I thought it was running daylights(those next to the front sensors in the front low bumper) are always turned off unless I turn the light switch to low beams. This turns off the main beams and turns on those low front bumper ones, but I wanted the car to do this automatically🤷‍♂️. Is this supposed to be like this? What I really wanted was the low front bumper ones always on during the day and the xenon ones on during the night on auto mode. Do you know if I can change this in the system settings, or it behaves like this on all models? I searched but didn't find anything related to that. Any help would be appreciated, thanks 😃

Did you buy it new?
A mate of mine had a Volvo a while back (now replaced) where he asked the dealer to reconfigure it so that they weren't on, though that was when not every car needed them.
They were generally required to be fitted from about 2011 on vehicles sold in the EU, but I'm not sure whether they MUST be enabled, that may have a different approval/manufacture date.

No, I bought it used. I could try to go to my local dealer to see what they say about it. As long as they don't charge me a small fortune for that simple reconfiguration, since Volvo services are extremely expensive😅

I got one with LED DRLs and Xenons. If the lights are automatic and the low beams turn on the LED DRLs will turn off. When the low beams are off the DRLs will turn on. I've noticed in the day time if its cloudy or just nor really sunny the low beams turn on and the DRLs turn off. The light sensors seem to be sensitive.

Only on newer cars from 2015/2016 has dimmable led DRLs which always stays on no matter what. Those DRLs have a voltage regulator extra and cant be retrofitted. I've tried. CEM gives out a incompatible software DTC.

They must be really sensitive. On auto, the DRLs of mine never turned on, only the beams, and I have the car for almost a week now. It's a shame that we can't retrofit that voltage regulator 😕

Hi my 2014 V40T5 Cross Country also is fitted with the Xenons. The very bright LED DRLs below the headlamp cluster are always on unless the light sensor detects low ambient light then the headlamps come on. Above the Xenons is a pair of LED lightbar "eyebrows" that are also on (almost making the DRLs redundant).

Hi, I went to my local dealer yesterday and they said the car is like this to comply with the regulations of each country. I'm from Portugal and my V40 was imported from Germany and it was previously registered in the Netherlands. It happens that in one of those two countries, it is mandatory to have main headlights(xenons or halogen) always on regardless of light conditions, again, to comply with countries's headlight standards or something. Here in Portugal, on Auto light switch, we have DRL's on during the day and the xenons during the night. At the moment my car has xenons always on and DRLs always off. And thats it, Volvo will change the software according to the one corresponding to my country. I'm going to the dealer to change it tomorrow, I believe the price is 25€ plus labor.

I don't really understand the headlights.

My DRLs are on all the time but during dawn / dusk, I want a bit more light. The main beam is too bright (that's for night driving!). In my old Focus, I used to turn the lights to the first position, which I know are for parking but nobody uses it for parking. The main advantage is that I had some red lights at the back so a little more illuminating for anyone behind me.

In this car, I either have too bright main beam or nothing (but DRLs - no good for people behind me).
