I had noticed on my V40 that on occasion the driver's door wouldn't open at the end of a journey until I had unlocked all doors, so I decided to experiment.

At the end of a journey a few days ago I stopped and turned engine off. Then I pulled the door handle towards me, and unlocked then locked the doors. At that point I was deadlocked in on the driver's side.

I unlocked all the doors, but couldn't get the driver's door to open. No matter what I did, I was locked in. The other doors could open OK. I restarted the engine, unlocked again, even opened the window but the door couldn't be opened from outside either!
I played with all the settings in My Car regarding security and arming the door locks and alarm, to no avail.

I ended up getting out the passenger door.

The next day the doors were back to normal and since then my door opens even if the rest are locked, but what happened was strange. Can someone else try the above to see if it's a generic problem or just something I need to get looked at?

many thanks

Although the door locks now seem to be OK, the problem might just conceivably reoccur on an occasion when you need to get out of the car quickly. I think you should ask your dealer to look into the problem.

I had the same issue, with the front passenger door, as mentioned on my blog in the quarterly reports. The lock was replaced by Volvo. The issue has yet not returned.

I had the same problem with N/S/R door, and yes the next morning it was back to normal, very strange but frustrating at the time with grandchildren in the back.

Not possible in ours as far as I could see. Noticed this for the first time on the same day as your post :)

Not, IMHO but is. Overkill on safety?

replaced already 3 times

Hi, I've a V40 Cross Country dated april/2013. I've had a similar problem multiple times. First with the rear/left door which, at the end of the journey occasionally could not be opened, neither form inside nor outside, even after repeatedly pressing the unlock button. usually after one or two days it "unlocked" itself and could be opened again.
My service shop replaced the lock mechanism once, then the problem started again after 4-5 months and replaced it again.
Now I've the same problem on the driver door, though this time if I press the unlock button the door can be opened, and they are replacing the lock mechanism again.
I asked the get it replaced on all four doors, but they said this is not a "known defect" so they cannot replace it under warranty.
What does it take to make it a known defetct?

No your lock is faulty take it back to the dealer they will replace it straight away (or should do), my dealer looked at me gone out when I just told them to fix it without booking it in, I pointed out it was safety issue, they said nothing further and sorted it.

The issue with the door locks seem this is happening quite regularly now:s

Who knows, I had to go very high before Volvo did the recall re no km/h reading in the TFT display lays year.

Then the bumper pealing fiasco, again it took several months for Volvo to admit there was an issue and replace under warranty (with bumpers that don't match)

Then there is the smearing drivers windscreen wiper, 12 months and 4 set of wipers later Volvo admit there is a design fault effecting some cars and there is no fix for it (but changing the wiper arm seems yo have helped on mine...touch wood)

I've had the same thing crop up on my front passenger door in the last month...for love nor money you can't open it from the inside or outside and the strangely after a few hours, it works again! I don't know if it's electrical or mechanical, but the car is going in next week to have it sorted. Darren

The door lock defect on early V40s is a problem Volvo are aware of. On both of my rear doors the locks have been replaced by modified units & wiring, the work carried out under warranty.

At least in the UK they are polite enough to steel your car while you are not in it, in South Africa it's a gun to the face.

Well that sounds nice... I live in a small town in middle England, and someone got hit on the head with a hammer on the way to their car. So out of character for this area! Least we don't have (many) guns!

This has been going off for over a year, BMW were supposed to have updated their system (cars updated at next service if it goes to the main dealer?)

There has been a large number of mk2 facelift focus ST's stolen, apparently in this manner.

Having said that if they really want the car they will still get it, previously it meant the thief would break in to your house and nick your keys (possibly beetling you up at the same time) so whilst not ideal it could be argued this is 'safer'.

And regardless of what type of key it has it will not stop them from sticking it on the back of the truck as what happened with the A3 black edition on the firms fleet (seen on CCTV)

Yes, it's a warranty fix.

I had both of my rear doors done, took about an hour.

I've had this problem with my rear passenger door in the past (had the lock replaced - it happened just before my first planned service). Recently it happened to my front passenger door too so will be making another trip to the dealership.

I think its related to how the normal lock interacts with the deadlock - when I have the problem, I can solve it by locking the car with the fob and waiting for the deadlock to kick in a few seconds later, after that, unlocking the car with the fob returns everything to normal. Likely related issue I've had recently is that my front passenger door seems to be operating in child-lock mode, only unlocking when I press the drivers side button.
