As they are mechanical I'd guess you need to remove the seat backs to get at the mechanism.

yes, its a strip down job i'm afraid. unless... if you dont mind making the removal permanent just cut the brackets
Not sure hacking away the safety features would go down well with an insurance company in the event of an accident.

The insurance company will love you as they won't have to pay out in event of accident.
Car would be unroadworthy as well and unsaleable in the future
For some, the ability to use a vehicle for their needs outweighs any future value or saleability, and the odds of being involved in an incident leading to an assessor declining to cover genuinely wouldnt be of concern. If I was in Darren's position the grinder would be 1st choice. might not suit for everyone...:)
