Hi Everyone,

I was excited to go to collect my 2013 V40 T4 SE (1600 cc Turbo 180hp) from the compliance centre.

I drove it home approx. 100 miles.

I had 2 error messages DSTC turned off
No ABS.

I put in some Premium petrol, obtained registration, and was given the number plates. Attached those and off I went.

The next day I connected my ODB Scanner and deleted the 2 error messages. I worked out how to change the language settings from Japanese to English. Played around with some settings and parked the car.

The day after I decided to wash the car after its long journey and sitting around the docks and the Compliance Centre. It was extremely dusty. From December to March.

There were many markings from the Japanese Exporter/Customs/Shipping Company and Customs here in NZ on the front Windscreen. This was oil based marking in different colours, and Multiple Stickers/Labels and markings.

I used Mineral Turpentine and Ajax Window Cleaner and a garden hose to help remove these markings.

I parked it overnight. The next day I decided to take it for a drive and let it warm up. It now had light up like a Christmas Tree with Multiple Warnings.

City Safe not working
Doors and Belts - even though the door was completely shut and belt buckled.

I'm thinking possibly the water had worked its way in? The only difference was that I had washed the car.

Then I started reading many of the posts here. I started to think about the battery.

Battery Charge Status 47% SOC
Alternator Charge Voltage Request 14.10 V
Battery Charge Balance Ah 0.20
Battery Current 0.94 A
BMS Status No Fault
Battery Status Calculation Reliable
Current Voltage: 13.43 V on
Current Voltage: 12.53 V off

Should I just buy a new Battery? Forget about trickle charging the old one?

The Error Codes:
First Scan
ECM P013716 O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage
ECM P209700 Post Catalyst Fuel Trim System Too rich
ABS C003A07 Right Rear Wheel Sensor - Mechanical Failure

Additional codes after washing the car:

CEM B11D453 Low Speed Collusion Mitigation by Braking Disabled
IAM B119F13 GPS Antenna General Electrical Failures
FSM U041568 Invalid Data from Brake Control Module
CVM U041568 Invalid Data from Brake Control Module
CVM U300066 Control Module
PSCM U041568 Invalid Data Received from ABS Control Module

I removed the codes today. Went for a drive. They all reappeared.

The passenger side Connecter has electrical tape wrapped around it.

The fusebox under the glove box has some fuse spaces but the manual says they are reserve.
Reserve Position 3, Constant Voltage

I also checked under the drivers carpet - it was dry. No moisture.

I would welcome any thoughts from people who have more expertise than I. I'm just an amateur mechanic.

In this city there is a Volvo Dealer according to the NZ website, but there is no branding to display any Volvo signage.

They are a multibrand dealer but I imagine the market is very limited here for passenger vehicles. However there are many trucks here in NZ that are Volvos.

a little concerned that I'm over my head in dealing with this V40.

Hi, with a scanner able to reset dtc's youre ahead of many! For me, I'd try disconnecting the battery and run a recharge/recondition on it with a suitable charger, then try again. Thats quite a low soh, so might not recover resulting in replacement required. Many cars with multiple dtc's are simply low on charge

The doors and belts warning will also come on if the rear doors have been opened and closed but no one has put a belt on. (eg putting a bag on the back seat)

TBH I would look at a replacement battery on the back of that info - but can't you get one from where you bought it? I don't know what a compliance centre is but does the vehicle come with any warranty? I recognise batteries are often excluded from such things, but considering the warning lights came on while you were driving home, it might be worth checking.
If not, I would be looking at a new battery as my first port of call. If you already have a smart charger you could try it for nothing, but less than 50% SOC doesn't look good, especially if you've driven it a distance. Do you know how long the vehicle had stood for before you drove it home?

The car took about 3 months getting from the auction house to the time I collected it. No warranty, as is. Compliance Centres are workshops that ensure the vehicle meets NZ standards and laws. Tyres were replaced, window tints removed, and a faulty light switch replaced.
The ABS light was illuminated as was the DSTC temporarily turned off message when I first got in the car. Online prices of AGM batteries 800 CCA are approximately 500 to 630 NZD in price depending upon brand. In my city/town auto electricians quoting about $650 to supply and fit with cheaper brands.

If the batteries are that expensive see if you have a mate with a car with a similar battery and swap them over just to see if it clears all the faults. If it does then you now you need to invest in a new battery.

I can't believe the batteries are that expensive though.

Agree with Tony1 - the 47% SOC could be the reason for the symptoms but it is a very expensive way forward if it isn't the cause.

You could also try a smart charger for a few days and try to bring the battery back, but getting back from 47% is probably beyond being repaired on these chargers. If you charge the battery on the vehicle, make sure you connect the negative clip to the body ground because it can screw the BMS apparently.

If you choose to replace the battery yourself (it isn't difficult) you would need a socket set, extensions and from memory, some torx drives for the fuse board that sits on top of the battery. There's a sequence that you are supposed to follow to reset the BMS once you swap it out. You'll find it on YouTube.

Hi, we live in Brisbane, Australia. Recently, we bought a 2016 V40 T4 Turbo Petrol Luxury version. We’ve had Volvos for over 20 yrs. We used to take them to dedicated Volvo dealerships, but around 15 yrs ago found a workshop that specialised in European cars, especially Volvos. We’ve used them ever since - also for our JGC. Hopefully, you’ll find something similar in your part of NZ.
