Whilst most engines will consume very little oil, many manufacturers issue statements or include a figure in the car handbook, such as they consider a litre every 1,000 miles to be perfectly acceptable. At that rate, many cars will have effectively had an oil change every 6,000 miles.

I believe Volvo do have a figure in connection with the early VEA engine ring issue, but the car handbook simply states that in some cases, the oil may need to be topped up between service intervals.

Just to check - What is considered to be excessive oil consumption for 2016 V40 D2 2.0 VEA engine?
My engine has 105 000 km. Oil change has been done at about 80 000, so yes long time. Car consumed 0.5 L in past 3000 km. Or it's leaking somewhere.
Volvo say anything up to 1lt per 1k miles is normal and anything more should be investigated, quite a few manufacturers have to have a mid service top up. If a high milage Volvo engine uses a little oil I wouldn't be too concerned.

My 2017 D2 is due a service in August and since the last service I've added 2x 0.5L of oil but it has done 122k miles so not overly concerned, runs and drives very well with no smoke so I can live with that.

Looks like a leak rather than a consumption. Or it could be already, given your insanely long intervals. I couldn't give more than 15kkm for the oil to be changed. When it will take something like a 1L/5000km, in a matter of a year it will take 1L/1000km given your driving habits and routine. My 2016 V40 D2 has 225k km and the consumption is around 0,5/10000km, but I'm changing the oil at every 8-10k km (only Castrol or Liqui Moly 0W20).
