Rear view mirror glass fell off

Hi,

I have a 2013 V40 D2 SE which I have had since it was almost new.

Yesterday the rimless rear view mirror glass fell off. It didn't break so I am wondering if this is something that gets stuck back on or do I need a new unit?

I would be interested to know if this has happened to anyone else.

Hello all, so I replaced the rear view mirror yesterday. Honestly, loads of fun

So the mirror itself pops off the stalk which was fairly easy, then putting the new mirror onto the stalk was a pain. I pushed a little to hard without supporting the back enough and pulled the stalk/mount off. Refitting the stalk/mount was awful but after removing the plastic trim it was easy. It goes on 90 deg facing the passenger side and then twist it back central. There is a earth cable that needs to go back into the stalk/mount if removed. Then re-add the plastic trim and finally attempt again with the mirror.

Also I noticed the stalk/mount I got with the new mirror was different in size and shape to the old so I kept the old.

This is the connection point that the rear view mirror stalk/mount connects to.

Left =old mount vs right new mount, Volvo part numbers on show I case anyone needs one. Shouldn’t though as they look like casts.

Left old, right new.

Same connection.

This is the connection point with everything removed. Trim was really easy to remove, start at top right, then reassemble start at top left after it has been fed over mount.

New mirror in place.

Any questions give me a shout.

Hello Carprods
Okay so the bottom of the stalk has three clips, these are shown in the picture of the two stalks (pic 4 from the top). These are what attach to the off shaped hexagon (pic 5 from the top). put the stalk to the hex so it slots over, it will be at an angle slightly towards passenger side if i remember correctly. Then twist whilst pushing towards the window, it will be a sudden jump and its on.

If you put it on at the correct angle initially it wont feel like it is on, when you twist it, it is quite unnerving as it doesn't feel right. Also i was very concious of the force applied towards the window (incase i slipped and scratched it).

It is this bit you are attaching it to: - Vehicle door Auto part Vehicle Bumper Automotive lighting

Its also best to remove the wire, just makes it easier. I also found it easier without the mirror itself on and attached that after.

There have been numerous complaints on line about this, unless your car is under warranty Volvo dealers say you have to have a complete new mirror system..........£94 fitted!!!!!!!
I have temporarily put the mirror back fixed with double sided carpet tape, BUT, it still tendsto slide down a little in very hot weather and need pushing back. (I fixed that by putting a strip of transparent Celotape at end round the mirror and to the back of it.) COST: about 10p.

Hi. My friend had the same problem.
My rear view mirror started slipping off the other day. I took it to Volvo, thy said they had never seen this happen before. I fixed it back on with some double sided tape but it looks damaged around the edges of the mirror. I think I will just put up with it as I can't imagine the price of a new one, plus the price of getting it fitted. Does anyone know how much it would be out of interest?

I bought the mirror of eBay new from an approved Volvo OEM supplier for £60.00 fitted myself guide in this thread. It’s was a bit of a pain. I to tried to live with one I had glued together but the edges were all damaged and for some reason it was really annoying me. So took the plunge.

Hi all, My name is Luke. I am the Director of Phoenix Wing Mirrors. I just thought I would say hello and make you aware we now offer a interior rear view mirror glass for the V40 which includes the V40XC.
This is a VERY common issue for the factory mirror glass to fall away from the back-plate, the reason this happens it due to the protective painted surface applied to the rear of the mirror glass, over time the paint de-laminates from the mirror glass, due to the weight of the mirror this occurs far faster than the exterior wing mirrors which suffer the same problem of the mirror falling away (we stock all of the Volvo exterior mirrors to!)
Our Mirror Is NOT Chamfered, Instead We Use Second Surface Chrome 3mm Mirror Glass Which Comes Supplied With Our Outstanding Full Size Adhesive Backing.
I have added the link to order below:

We welcome you to get in touch for any mirror requirements.

Lastly every mirror we sell is cut right here in the U.K!

Looking forward to hearing from you guys!

Stay safe

Luke

I have a 2017 V40 Cross Country Pro Nav D2. The rear view mirror as recently fallen off with the cold weather. The parts of the mirror is now coming away so it’s just see through glass. I’ve been told that I have an anti-dazzle rear view mirror so this will be expensive to replace? Where is the best place to order a replacement?

Best Wishes,
Tom

Same thing just happened to mine, 2017 V40, what’s the warranty period for this type of issue
Hi my mirror fell off yesterday, luck did not break, so used the old double sided tap to fix back in place, but at also back door drivers side wont open now , has the car has only done less than 32,0000, I contacted Volvo to see if they can do anything, apparently Volvo have a policy, not a recall on this book in for a Tec to say yes the door wont open!!, in the hope Volvo pay for the repaie wil keep you all post4d
thanks
My mirror fell off 6mth ago hitting the centre console so i have a scratch now that i see every time i get in the car . My rear drivers side door stopped opening aswell so when the car was in for a service i asked if they could look at it , i dont know what they done but it opens now & they did'nt charge me so it must be a easy fix .
Hi All, I too have now just experienced the same issue, the glass slowly peeled away from the plastic mount. The glass is realty heavy and backing material from the back of the silver side of the mirror comes away from the silver.

It would seem like this is a safety issue, a rear view mirror is a part needed for a UK MOT test and many people in this forum and likely many others have had this issue.

One poster has mentioned that they had theirs replaced with a newer unit which now comes with a bezel rather than the rimless design, and suggesting this was redesigned to address specifically this issue. This is clearly a manufacturing issue that in turn is a safety issue. However not sure who the authority on this would be that we can give this evidence to.

The original mirror has part number 31468057.
Replacing it with the same will just result in the same issue in 3-4 years.
Does anyone know the part number of the redesigned unit with bezel, this is likely not to suffer the same issue at all.

I can't help with the alternate type of mirror, but from the point of view of the MOT and UK legislation, the car must be equipped with two rear view mirrors, at least one of which must be external and provide a view to the rear along the offside of the vehicle. If the interior mirror is missing, provided that the vehicle has two external mirrors that afford the driver an adequate view to the rear along both sides of the vehicle, it complies with the legislation and will pass the test.

In other words either an interior mirror and offside door mirror or no interior mirror but both nearside and offside door mirrors are suitable to comply with legislation.
Well I'm another victim. After a chilly night I got in the car today to find the interior mirror glass half hanging off.
Still vaguely secured at one side, not sure how, can't feel anything without pulling it off further.
Sellotape at the edge for now to keep it in place.
There seems to be a sort of weird thin black membrane behind the glass stuck to the mount.

Me too... repaired with carpet tape, just stuck over the black membrane. Was unsure if to remove said membrane but it started to make a major mess so left it in place
Anyone know what the membrane is and does?
I vaguely recall a post a while back about the glass having a black painted coating on the back for some reason and that can peel off, maybe that's it?
On reflection, I would say its the primer/paint applied before the adhesive. In my mind its similar to windscreen primer?
