Rear view mirror glass fell off

Hi,

I have a 2013 V40 D2 SE which I have had since it was almost new.

Yesterday the rimless rear view mirror glass fell off. It didn't break so I am wondering if this is something that gets stuck back on or do I need a new unit?

I would be interested to know if this has happened to anyone else.

May I ask those guys with this mirror problem...
It seems that soon or later will happen to every car. What can be done as pre-"treatment" to prevent this to happen?
To apply some glue around, or some sticky tape or something else?...
What are your suggestions?

Just leave it. Glue or sticky tape will just ruin the aesthetic of the rimless mirror. If/When it falls off clean both parts with alcohol wipes to remove any dirt/grease/remains of old glue... then use some heavy duty 3M pads to stick it back in place.
Thanks for the quick answer : )
Ive been thinking about the primer delaminating from the glass, might be worth asking a friendly "autoglass" type chappie for a quick spread, or buy a 30ml pot from a source including a well known action site before the new adhesive is applied. The same delamination fault is prevalent on many range rover front screens, un-noticed it can cause upwards of 10k's worth of damage, makes our mirror issue fairly trivial!!
Does anyone know if it also performs any optical or protective function. Just wondering before I apply any adhesive to the now-exposed back of the glass?
I spotted discolouration/dark spots (almost like peeled away foil) around the edge of the rimless mirror in my 2013 D4 around a year after I bought the car in 2015. I made a Volvo dealer aware of it when the car was in for warranty work (door seal replacement). They replaced the mirror as part of the work - but the replacement mirror has a rim around it. When I asked about the difference, I was told that it was a design change to address problems with the mirror glass dis-bonding from the mirror. Pics of new mirror below.

Same problem on 18 plate V40 T2 Rdesign with 24k miles.
Spoke with local dealer and replaced complete mirror under 100% Goodwill from Volvo. No charge.
Just to add that I bought a mirror from Phoenix and fitted it a few days ago.
Used a hair dryer (as recommended) to ensure the adhesive pad worked effectively and it's all good so far.
Very pleased with the design, fit and instructions. (y)
Recently had the same problem with the rear view mirror glass dropping off after a night of cold weather. As this appears common I think there is a design fault here. My v40 is a 2017 plate. Main dealer charged £130 for fitting a replacement. I wonder if the manufacturer should compensate.
On reflection,
I like what you did there ;)
Just adding my +1. Cold night last night, and it happened to my six year old. will try double sided tape before resorting to Phoneix above.

Worked perfectly, still holding on. :)

It isn't a design fault - it just happens to lots of cars. I owned a V40 for 5 years and it never once fell off, even during the "beast from the east" when temperatures in Scotland fell as low as -26

Sometimes you get lucky and other times you don't

Hello all, so I replaced the rear view mirror yesterday. Honestly, loads of fun

So the mirror itself pops off the stalk which was fairly easy, then putting the new mirror onto the stalk was a pain. I pushed a little to hard without supporting the back enough and pulled the stalk/mount off. Refitting the stalk/mount was awful but after removing the plastic trim it was easy. It goes on 90 deg facing the passenger side and then twist it back central. There is a earth cable that needs to go back into the stalk/mount if removed. Then re-add the plastic trim and finally attempt again with the mirror.

Also I noticed the stalk/mount I got with the new mirror was different in size and shape to the old so I kept the old.

This is the connection point that the rear view mirror stalk/mount connects to.

Left =old mount vs right new mount, Volvo part numbers on show I case anyone needs one. Shouldn’t though as they look like casts.

Left old, right new.

Same connection.

This is the connection point with everything removed. Trim was really easy to remove, start at top right, then reassemble start at top left after it has been fed over mount.

New mirror in place.

Any questions give me a shout.

Hi there, I was just wondering how you removed the plastic trim from around the rear view mirror to gain access to the stalk etc. I knocked my Rear view and now the manual auto dimming doesn't really work i.e the mirror is permanently dark, also seems loose one end with foil dropping out, just thinking about how to replace it. Thanks?

Hi my mirror glass dropped off a while ago couldn't understand why so just carefully applied some bostik glue to the housing and put it back on with some tape around the edges and a couple of elastic bands to hold it in place next day it was well stuck and trimmed off the edges with a craft knife . I bought the bostik glue from Wilco's because the chrome bit of the gear lever came off in my hand as well unusual sticky maintenance ? 2016 d2 nav
