Good morning
My steering went stiff one day and I exchanged the whole rack as the there was a power steering failure .
Now I need to program it as it’s not connected to the central computer, so it’s still stiff .
Volvo won’t do it as this has to be done with the whole new part ( 1200£ plus VAT )
An independent garage didn’t have a program and still charged me for few hours work , blaming me for the new installed part as fake (!).
Who of you can pregram it ?
I can travel across UK . I am based in Reading UK.

You could try contacting the VDash authors at D5T5.com - bit of a long shot but they might be able to help. The other alternative is to search for and contact Matt Leavesley on FB. If you have VIDA on a PC or laptop and a DiCE unit, he may be able to connect remotely and do the programming. The other alternative is an independent Volvo repairer with a VIDA account, although it may be that VIDA can only program a new virgin unit and that is the problem?

Many thanks for Your reply !
I think the problem is that this part was already programmed for the car it is coming from.
It’s used and original but I think it needs be be cleaned from the previous software.
It’s scandalous besides that Volvo locks some parts by programming it for just one car .

Not just Volvo, it's pretty standard across the automotive industry. Part of the reason is to prevent cars being stolen to order to obtain parts required to repair similar vehicles, which had previously been a big problem and still is for those marques where although similar security is present, it is not as robust and more easily circumvented. The alternative is to find that your own car had been stripped whilst parked in a work or public car park, or towed off your driveway at night to be broken up for parts.

So this part can be “hacked “ into ?
To it’s all legal .
I bought the part .
Not stolen .
I'm not suggesting your part was stolen, but theft of vehicles to be broken for parts is a problem, and one of the ways that manufacturers are attempting to address that is by tying items to the specific car they are first fitted to, so that they cannot be reused on another vehicle.

I'm not certain that is the case with your rack, but it does appear to be what Volvo are saying. VDash has a facility to copy the config of an ECU programmed to your car, and to write that to a new unit, as an alternative to having to use Volvo to program the new unit into the car. So the car thinks that the new unit is actually the old one, since the firmware and programming appear exactly identical . Whether it can write to a unit that has already been programmed to a different car I don't know. You would have to ask them.

Sellers of used car parts are often quite happy to take your money for parts though on the understanding that you know what you are doing, or sometimes because all they care about is making money on the part and whether it is actually of any use doesn't concern them.

Check with VDash and/or Matt Leavesley. If they don't know the answer, I doubt anyone else will either.

It would be my mechanic who should know better .
He bought the part , installed it and then gave me the car saying he gives up( he said best luck in looking for a program) .
So we don’t talk anymore .
Reading Waylands Volvo are ignoring me on purpose I think .
I have been bombarding with calls .
They don’t want to clear the part from old code and install it I suspect .
Only install a new part .
Mechanics can’t do it .
I searched for Matt Loveseley .
It came up with like ten results?
Which one is it ?
Can you send me a Facebook link ?
PS: Do you think Volvo dealers can / want to help me ? Or ignoring it on purpose ?
Kind regards

As I've said, I don't know for certain, but I suspect the diagnostic equipment used by Volvo will only allow a virgin unit to be programmed to a car for the reasons I've explained.

Search for Matt Leavesley or Matthew Leavesley NOT Loveseley. Several results on Google.

He has a YT channel: https://youtube.com/user/mototmat4

and posts in the Vida DICE owners UK and Europe FB group.

Also has his own website, but I'm away from home on my phone and don't have the link with me.

No problem . I was told to find someone to clear the used part from the program used for the car it was coming from .
Then wanted to charge me 120£ to program it .
Question remains; who will clean the part ? They won’t as that’s not the policy .

Ah..Ok thanks a lot for letting me know. Saved me the cost of swapping the units around for nothing.

Thanks
