I recently purchased a d4 v40 on 80k miles and I must admit I love the car. I’ve been looking for one for a long time as it ticked every box - performance, fuel economy, tax, comfort and that it’s slightly different to what other people my age (20) drive. But the one thing I’ve noticed is that the MPG simply isn’t as good as anticipated, getting 43 MPG in a 45 minute commute when really trying which is mostly national speed limit roads. My old golf 1.6tdi used to get 55 MPG and the manufacturers stats don’t claim to be as good as the D4 V40.

I totally understand that this is a 190bhp car but this seems very low compared to what is stated, what are everybody else getting? Is there a way I can improve this via modifications without losing performance?

43 mpg on D4 seems quite good to me. I have T5 so I'm happy for 30 but probably some guys here with D4 can compare it with their numbers. But as I said it looks fine to me for such a powerful diesel engine. I had 115 hp V40 D2 1.6 before and it was doing 50-60 mpg.

It all depends on your driving style as well. Do you accelerate hard? Brake late?

Don't forget it is the middle of winter as well, you will have the heater and AC on, heated seats, heated screens etc. All those will use that bit of fuel as well.

Is your 45 minute commute in stop start traffic? Are you using the auto stop function when stationary?

I only have a D2, but driving at the speed limits on my 200 mile weekly commute through Scotland I get about 65mpg. But to do that I gently speed up and slow down and use cruise control whenever possible.

I have the same experience as you (I'm 20 as well, got a 80k miles V40 D4 too), and experienced that, but on city driving.
On national roads, my average is about 50mpg and city about 40.

I felt a decay in economy at city, as it became 36mpg. This was due to one and/or both:

• had low tire pressure
• had cheaper diesel instead of premium diesel

For me, premium diesel is worth it, at the mpg difference in city driving.

What I would suggest is fill 1 full (60?) litres tank of Shell Vpower / Esso Supreme diesel. Reset your mpg meter. Make sure your cold tyre pressures are as per the recommended pressures. it may differ due to rim size/engine combo, but on 16inch, they are around the 36psi mark. Take the the car on a motorway trip (I know difficult, as we're in lockdown), ok say take trip on some 40-50mph roads to a supermarket (hee hee). Going mostly 40-50mph, you should see average fuel consumption of 60-70mpg. There was one D4 user here, who managed around 60mpg on a long motorway trip at 70mph. You may need to do 2 full tanks of the best diesel, for their cleaning properties. Had a flatmate who switched from supermarket diesel to Shell Vpower, gave her 50-60 miles more per tank after 3 full tanks of Shell's finest @ 20, 40 and 60 miles more per Vpower tank when it didn't give any more after the 3rd tank. Tank is only 40 litres on that car though.
Oh yea and cruise control at NSL tend to give me better mpg that my manual right foot.

I am regularly driving from east anglia up to the Lake District for work and I average around 56/58 mpg and it doesn’t seem to matter if it’s super market fuel or shell v power fuel I am a d4 on 86k

It's all depends on driving, last year I went for trip to Poland, 18's wheels , full roof box on, 2 adults plus child, driving 70 mph as don't wanna go faster with box and on full tank did over 700 miles till light come on, been happy with that, but in town driving with heavy foot probably doing 430-500 miles on full tank

I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed with the MPG as well. I'm over 50 but not necessarily stereotypical of a 50 year old driver. I recently drove my my17 D4 on a couple of motorway trips and got an average of 56 mpg over 230 miles. I use the ACC a lot and these trips were at night, with no AC, some bad weather which meant i spent quite a bit slightly below 70. My daily commute is 25miles each way with 80% of that on the dual carriageway and I'm not getting 50 mpg BUT it is very hilly for my journey so i regularly see the instantaneous MPG drop below 25.

Hi new here, I've had my v40 65 plate for 2 years now and I get 46-49 mpg bcos I drive a bit sensible now 🤦🏻‍♂️
