Hi I'm looking to see of any one can help. My car (Volvo v40 Rdisgin 2015) has been making a noise that sort of sounds like a relise of air I think its comming from the front drivers side. The sound is more noticable when I go over a bump or pot hole or when I take my foot off the accelerator. I've since then taken it to two garages the one told me ot was the gears in the air conditioning and they would not be able to do that kind of job the second a Volvo Specialist told me it was the rear brake disc backing plates. They removed them and told me the problem was solved. Unfortunately it's still hissing at me. Anyone have any ideas of what the sound could be? Thanks.

Strange noises are always difficult to track down as noises get transmitted around the car.
I would start with a method of elimination, switch off the aircon, if it doesn't stop then you know it's not the aircon gas hissing. then switch off the blower fan to check it's not a noisy fan..
Then drive with the windows open and listen for noises from the wheels which might indicate a wheel bearing if it makes a noise as you steer left or right and the car weight shifts from one side to the other.
Then creaking squeaking as you go over bumps indicates steering ball joints or suspension.
Apply the brakes are they noisy?
I'm sure some others will join in in this guessing game once you give us some more onomatopoeic descriptions.

It sounds like its comming from the drivers side at the front when I take my foot off the accelerator. Have had a listen today and if still there when the ac is off and no air is blowing, also cant hear anything when I use the brakes just a second of air being released when I take my foot of the accelerator.

Mine has been doing what sounds the same for about at least two years (2014 R Design), so I've stopped worrying about it. More noticeable in warm weather, hisses briefly when under acceleration at about 1500rpm, and hisses briefly on the overrun (when foot off the accelerator). I've had several diagnostics carried out and nothing found. Sometimes not there at all, and certainly has made no difference to the performance or fuel use. Does this sound similar to yours?

Yes that sounds fairly similar. It's a split second hiss that I only noticed with the windows down I probably wouldent have noticed it otherwise. It's been there for about 2 weeks. I've already spent about £200 on trying to get a answer and nothings changed it was just worth asking incase any one had had the same kinda of thing and managed to get a answer. Thank you.

Could be the spinning turbo you can hear. High frequency, almost a whistling sound.
That would be normal as its speed varies.
As your foot operates the accelerator the fuelling needs on the engine alter and the turbo responds by blowing more or less air into the cylinders.

You might find the 'noise' reduces or disappears in colder weather. It does with mine.

Colder air is denser and contains more oxygen so the turbo takes the intake air temperature into account. It doesn't have to work so hard to get the right amount of oxygen into the engine.
It would play a different note on a colder day or not be in the human audible range. A dog probably could always hear the turbo.
