I like this amazing guy, he almost made me replace my 406 coupe with the 508 SW with this nice review. At least he got me to test drive it, which I did over a weekend.

In the 508 you get a much larger car with better specs for same price as the V40, but I chose the Volvo in the end. Why?
I discovered I did not need all that space offered by the 508 SW. For a small family of three, for mainly urban driving, the V40 should be enough.
I preferred the design of the lovely V40 over, in my opinion, the first nice looking Peugeot since the 406 Coupe.
I found the quality and look of the interior superior in the Volvo.
The 508 did not have start stop in petrol, a smart feature for urban driving.
The ride was surprisingly more choppy in the 508, not nice at all on our Polish roads, that must be the most challenging testing ground for a cars suspension in EU. The 406 Coupe is of course more comfy than both new cars, but it lacks the sporty feel of the Volvo.
I did not find a good position behind the wheel in the Pug. I have the same issue in my 406 Coupe, but it is even worse in the 508, as the steering wheel does not extend far enough for a tall guy like me. In the V40 I could sit perfectly, you really notice the designed around you philosophy, it's not only pure marketing. Oh, and the seats were much more comfy in the Volvo.
In the 508 there was no space to put away anything due to all the electronics and buttons everywhere. In the V40 there were nice storage areas everywhere.
The electronics in the car I got for a weekend of testing delivered error readings a few times. Little scary. This I have never experienced in a Volvo.
Although featuring a lovely sunroof free of charge, not impeding on headroom in contrast to the V40, the 508 SW does not offer city safety, which is a very important safety feature for me. I drive mainly in town, sometimes with my small baby that is an expert on distracting the driver.
In general, the Volvo felt far more premium and in my opinion it deserves to compete in the top.
Already after a few minutes behind the wheel of the V40 I was totally sold. This was the absolutely best Volvo I have ever driven, better than the V60 I have often been driving long distances, better than the XC60 I got for a weekend of testing and especially the XC70 in T5 I sometimes drive at work. I even noticed the quality of the interior was slightly better in the V40 than in the other Volvos, barely noticeable, but it just felt better screwed together.
The German cars the V40 is expected to compete with I barely looked at, as I do not like the design of the more expensive BMW 1 Series while the A3 I personally think is simply dull, kind of more of the same.
I look forward to my V40, today I got delivery date set to 29 September, hope they keep the deadlines in Ghent
