Wheel and Tyre size guidelines

Having changed V40s last summer, my wife has just experienced the first snow of the winter here in the Highlands. The previous V40 was a Cross Country on a 64 plate, running with Vredestein Quatracs on 17 inch rims and it handled snow pretty well. The "new" one is a 65 plate, with decent summer tyres on 18 inch rims and is really poor in the snow.

Before I get a set of Quatracs to put on the 18 inch rims, I am wondering how much of the poorer performance is down to the wheel size/tyre width and I've been looking into getting a set of 17 inch wheels. I'm shocked at the prices being asked for a set of second hand V40 wheels - Best I've seen was ÂŁ890 plus ÂŁ200 delivery and there is no way I'm paying that! For comparison, I recently got a second set of alloys for my Discovery 3 for ÂŁ40 and a set for a Mark IV Golf for ÂŁ120 delivered. I've yet to go down the Ford rims route, but hoping that might show some more reasonable prices.

Does anyone have thoughts on the importance of going down a wheel size versus just replacing the tyres on the current rims?
