Hello,
I was wondering if you could help me out. I’ve been to look at a rebel blue d4 r design lux nav today and everything seems to be okay with the car. Is there anything I should look out for the car is a 2014(64) with 40k on the clock.
Thanks in advance

If it's one of the VEA D4 engines (the newer 4-cylinder engine instead of the older 5-cylinder), ask the dealer to provide evidence that it has had the EGR and cooler replacement and updated engine management software installed, and if not, expect that the work be done before buying the car. It's a common problem with the VEA D4 engines that results in emissions warnings and/or coolant draining issues. However it is an acknowledged and resolved issue by Volvo and has actually been forward-fixed on newer models.

Other than that, if it looks sound, feels sound and drives sound then enjoy!

Thank you will there usually be something in the service history indicating this as I believe the vehicle has full service history.
Alternatively if I call the Volvo dealaship
It’s been serviced at will they share the information with me.

If its a 64 plate it will have the older 5 Cylinder engine, providing it has fully service history you should have nothing to worry about. The old Volvo 5 cylinders are slightly thirstier than their newer 4 cylinder VEA counterparts but they are ultimately the last of the good old fashioned proven Volvo engines, they are as reliable as the sun and I don't see you having any issues with it.

I own a 15 plate D3 Rebel Blue R-design Lux Nav which also has the 5 cylinder engine (they have the same basic block) and it is also around similar mileage bar standard servicing it hasn't let me down or cost me anything (owned it from new)

Also with the 5 cylinder engine you won't need to worry about EGR value problems as this problem only effects the newer 4 Cylinder VEA engines

Unfortunately not. The VEA D4 was introduced in MY15 which started in April 2014, so a 64-plate car will have the VEA engine.

Regarding the EGR cooler problem, it has never been an official recall, just a 'fix on failure' issue. The warranty on that particular fault was extended to four years, but for a 64-plate that could run out as early as September this year. Some dealers have been giving the owner a worksheet to keep to show the revised EGR system has been fitted, but from what I've read on here most do not, so unless that sheet is present with the car's document pack there's no way of knowing if the EGR fix has been implemented.

Only the D4 was replaced by the VEA for MY15 - all the other petrol and diesel engines (including your D3) were still the existing Ford 4-cylinder or Volvo 5-cylinder engines. The rest of the engine lineup was were replaced by the VEA units in MY16.
