Cost of Ownership

I have a 2015 D3 CC Momentum doing 86 000km. I've had the car on a maintenance and service plan for the past 6 years, which is due to end in September.

I'm quite happy with the car but I wonder what services and maintenance will cost me going forward?

I'm considering selling the car for this reason and would appreciate any idea of costs and advice as to how to manage the car.

I found that after reading posts on here about servicing costs it can vary by a lot from dealer to dealer.

My V40 is going in next Monday for a service and MOT, the cost I've been quoted is ÂŁ306.
Which includes:
Oil
Oil filter
Cabin filter
Brake fluid change
Air filter
Software updates
12 months breakdown cover
Mini valet
Courtesy car if required
MOT

Obviously any parts required for the MOT are extra.

All in ÂŁ306 inc VAT.

I took mine to a small independent Volvo specialist and servicing cost was very reasonable.

I guess costs mount when major things start to fail and that's a risk with any car that's worth too much to dump if that happens.

Personally I hope to keep mine for many years and expect to stump for the occasional significant repair.

Biggest cost by far for most cars are clutch and timing belt. I think the timing belt is good for 108,000 miles (or 10 years) on the D3 engine so sounds like you have a little while to go before that.

Even then you are looking at approx ÂŁ350 at an indy for the cam belt change (based on 2 I have had done on 2 Volvo's over the last 48 months)

I suspect it will be substantially more to have that belt changed at a dealer..

Good Day! I own a D4 (5cyl) at around 172 000 km, if your car is a pre VEA I can tell you that servicing is pretty straightforward as the 5 cylinder Diesel Engine is known to be very very reliable.
According to the info I can get (VIDA, Google and my car's reports), it is mostly check-ups, oil changes and Air Filter (interior) changes.
Every second service: Fuel Filter, Brake Fluid, Air Filter (Engine).
The only big services are The Drive belts every 6 years or 180k km.

PS: This is my first post here. I hope it's up to the forum's standards.
PS2: I am considering making a thread about the D4's Service schedule, as I can not find a good one anywhere (i have gotten hold of the information required now.)

ÂŁ560+ that's shocking.
I've had my V40 nearly 6 years from new, it's been served every year by the same Volvo dealer I bought it from, and each service has been carried to the exact recommended schedule , ie parts fitted ect, as per Volvo recommendations, but I can't ever recall paying over ÂŁ320 !
I'm always given a list of parts fitted, and there's never been anything not fitted that should of been according the the Volvo service schedule.

I have no qualms about using a reputable non dealer garage to service my car, but I just can't see them coming in much cheaper that would convince me to swap, plus they may not be able to offer the software updates that a dealer can, or possibly would not use genuine Volvo parts ?

Don't get me wrong, if I was getting quotes like ÂŁ560 for a 4th service I would be looking elsewhere.

I was quoted all of this for approx ÂŁ500, and an additional ÂŁ60 for the brake fluid. I can't help but think this is insane!!! All this on a car that has barely done 5000 miles every year. Went to a local independent specialist, they checked the vehicle service history and mileage (19000 in 4 yrs) and quoted ÂŁ190.

I must say I generally steer clear of the dealers unless absolutely necessary. My mother in law had a v40 and stone acre (our local Volvo dealer) took it in for a service. A couple of days later its engine management light came on.

I ran a quick diagnostic and found a couple of faults. Ended up being a plug which had been detached from the head. Was a weird one for sure but I will stick with doing it myself until body doesn't let me anymore. Those prices are ridiculous

My first year service back in the day of my 68 plate V40 Momentum Nav Plus (1.5 petrol Geartronic) was ÂŁ285, which was the most expensive car I had ever serviced. Previous cars they were about ÂŁ100 cheaper on average to service from the dealer. It was a lease, so had to use main dealer. Also V40 engines are comparatively thirstier than their German counterparts (worse on fuel)!

Bit of an update to my price mentioned above.
So dropped the car off at the dealers earlier this morning for the MOT & service, the service dept just rang and apparently it needs new brake pads on the front, 90% worn and MOT failure, plus wiper blades to pass the MOT, so the extra cost is ÂŁ120 inc Vat and fitting for genuine Volvo pads and wiper blades.
Not sure if that's a good price or not for a dealer ?

If I'm honest I was very surprised it needed either of these for the MOT as I've not noticed any smearing on the screen and have not had a signs that the pads needed changing, but it is what it is I guess !!

I wasn't sure what service this was but on checking the service book it's service no 6.
The car has only done around 17000 miles from new almost 6 years ago.
Not sure if pads should last longer than that, as I'm not heavy on the brakes .
They did send a video of the pads and they do look low though !

I've just picked the car up.
The service paperwork print out says, software check & update, number blah blah blah, cost = ÂŁ0.00
So I'm assuming there's no charge ?

The extra I had to pay was for new front pads and wiper blades to get it the the MOT = ÂŁ120 fitted inc VAT.
Total cost for the service including parts & MOT and the extra parts for the MOT was ÂŁ429 inc vat

I'll get the paperwork from the car tomorrow and give the exact breakdown of costs per item.
I know the new brake fluid was something like ÂŁ42 inc vat and labour
Wiper blades were something like ÂŁ26 fitted, which I think isn't bad because I paid more than that for a set from "Halfrauds" last year which have clearly worn away.
Washer bottle top up ÂŁ3.50, which is a joke because I topped it up myself 2 days ago and have only driven the car once since then !
New front pads fitted ÂŁ94
Software update ÂŁ0.00

Can't remember the rest just yet.

They probably emptied it whilst testing your 'dodgy wipers' doing the MOT! :eek:

The washer bottle top up is supposed to be free.
I would have asked for my old pads and blades back. Unless they are torn I don't think they are an MOT failure.
Same with the pads, the fail level is 1.5mm if there was more than that then they should only have warned you they were worn.

If you had those parts you would also have had the evidence to make a complaint to the DSVA that you were failed to get you to spend money on unnecessary repairs.

I would of expected a brake pad low level warning first before they actually needed replacing.
I'll query all this with them !

So, I just popped into my local Volvo dealership who serviced & mot'd the car last week, I queried if I actually needed pads & wiper blades for the MOT, basically were these items an actual fail or advisory ?
On the day of the service & MOT the girl on the desk at the service department rang me and said the car had failed on brake pads and wiper blades, which really did surprised me, but as the car was now a failure I agreed to get them replaced.
Today when I returned querying why there was no warning if the pads were so low, and also the wiper blades were change around 4 months ago ?
I also had ace up my sleeve !
The video they sent at the start of the service, where the fitter walks around underneath the car showing it's condition you could just about hear him saying something like "pads were 90% worn and was advising to get them change" !
So why was "advising" changed to "fail" ?
After some discussion behind closed doors with the service desk girl, fitter and service manager it was agreed as a "goodwill gesture" that the girl on the desk had mistakenly said the pads & wiper blades were a failure instead of an advisory.

Result ÂŁ100 refund, which suited me as it meant I had genuine Volvo new pads & blades fitted for ÂŁ20.

Was this a genuine mistake, I dont know, but it has put me off using them next year, which is a shame, as up until now they really have been very good and very reasonable with the servicing prices.

My local lot suggested I part with £600 on a car I've had 5 months. Thats before an MOT and service! Trying to recoup what they spent not fixing the previous car 🤣
