Ask the dealer's when you're there ,price wise there was only about £10 or so difference when I got mine and let them do it,it's less hassle and you know it's the right one.

I know Volvo dealers can be competitive for a battery, what are they charging at the moment? ( excuse the pun )

I think mine was around £170 Inc VAT ,they fitted it free.

When I looked last year went from £60 for something I had never heard of to over £450 ,for £10/£15 I was more than happy for Volvo to do it while the wife and I had a coffee,I ride a motorbike as well and can do a reasonable amount of maintenance on my vehicles ( hate doing chain on bike,miss my shaft drive BMW ) but I was all done in under hour,no problem and no hassle for me,obviously you can do it yourself as many on here have,but I am getting as can not be a****d any more.

I’ll be honest I haven’t really read through more than the last 10 or so posts...however....

I’ve been having the same problem for a couple of years and this would be VERY briefly resolved by slapping a charger on. Took it to the dealers for a replacement (can’t remember the quote) and they said they’d replace it if I wanted but recommended testing it first (cost about £15) and it still had pretty good health. They told me the warning is very common in V40s and advised the start stop was the likely culprit (I initially always turned it off then just left it on and eventually it stopped working and the low charge warnings surfaced). They advised the best way is to manually turn off start/stop to allow the main battery to charge as I’m guessing start stop sups life out of it first!

Stop/start won't work if main battery is not charged enough,so deactivating stop/start won't make any difference to it charging at all .

Correct, stop/start is not available when state of charge of the main battery is less than 74-75 % SOC, easy to observe on a smartphone with app called Car Scanner Elm Obd2.

The way I interpreted it was that yes the stop/start does not work but that the stop/start battery will continue to charge if activated? So by deactivating it it won’t take any charge from the main battery? I could be completely wrong as I have no idea how it all actually works!

The battery monitor will charge both batteries as needed,stop/start battery is not charged from main battery but by the alternator, I think ?disabling the start/stop will just stop it from activating the stop/start,the main car battery starts the car ,the small stop/start battery only powers ancillary like radio,lights,,A/C when car is stopped and engine off,

found the answer. I had low cost ELM327 ODB scanner. I bought premium one and I see all the stats

Hi guys,

The car started to show the low battery message and the USB plug (mobile charger) stopped to work... I have 2 questions:

1- The USB plug stopped to work because the battery is low (maybe it is a protection)?

2- How can I know which battery is low? The start-stop is not working, but I don't like to use the start-stop.

Take your car to a service and get it fully checked. Maybe in your situation, you’ll be able to change your battery in a service, because when I had my battery almost dead, I couldn’t go to the service because of the coronavirus, so I had to look for an alternative at the time. Ended up asking all my friends and family members and couldn’t get a wise answer. I even watched YouTube videos on how to charge your batteries or something like that, but the good thing is that I found a solution to these issues. After a week o found a website https://batterytools.net/ and it had all the information needed to learn about car batteries and eventually fix them yourself. So, I spent 2-3 hours reading and on the next day I’ve replaced the battery myself.

Had a similar issue, battery didn't charge enough to enable Start-stop even after a long drive (about 200 KMs), so I replaced it with a Varta one (as I am told, volvo uses Varta batteries from the factory also), it was around 140 Euros, never had any issues again.

Just want to drop a quick reply for anybody reading this in posterity. I had this message since the day I bought the car and was told by the second hand dealership that batteries lose charge when they have been sitting there for a while. All it really needed was a nice long motorway journey and the issue resolved itself in 2 days. Note that it may not go away as soon as you complete a journey since the system will take time to detect the improved charge but it will most often go again. Again, this might be purely anecdotal but made sense to me

I've had the battery low charge warning. Went through all the rigmarole of getting a Ctex charger and it went away for a bit. But you have to think on that it's the original battery and is getting on for 9 years old. So in order to save myself from a non starter in the depths of winter I went and spashed £176 at halfords for a new main battery. The car spins over much better now and I'm confident that when winter comes it's not going to leave me stranded.
