Well yes I certainly can! I am a Volvo mechanic, so I have access to wiring diagrams and the technical specification and parts and that helped me. I looked in a brochure for V40 2017 and noticed one of the cars had paddle shifters. I then began researching. I learned that Volvo introduced paddle shifters with the V60 polestar (which came in 2014), so the first thing I did was to crosscheck the wiring diagrams for the gear selector module (GSM) in a 2013 V40 and a 2014 V60. Even though paddle shifters are drawn in the wiring diagram for a 2013 V40 you will find out that it will not communicate with the GSM, so the first thing is to get 2014 parts. I have the illuminated gear knob and wanted to keep this, so for those of you that want to this and keep the nice illuminated gear knob, or want to do this and retrofit one, the GSM with part number 32207748 is what you need. Otherwise you can use any 2014+ GSM. Then you will need a new SWM module, and stalks. I went for SWM module with part number 31481774, wiper stalk with part number 31456038 and signal stalk with part number 31456045. Then you will need the steering wheel. I found a used one on a 2014 V60, but you could also visit a dealer and get a complete and new steering wheel, but this is really expensive. Lastly, you will need 4 repair terminals with part number 30656669. Remember that if your Volvo is 2014+ you will only need the steering wheel and repair terminals (and the GSM listed if you want the illuminated gear knob as well). Then what you do is that you remove the old steering wheel, SWM module, center console and the old GSM. On the steering wheel side you will open the connector going to the SWM. One repair terminal is going into port 1 and one into port 5. Then you will need to splice a wire from each repair terminal and down to the GSM. From there you add one repair terminal in the GSMs connector port 4 and the last repair terminal into port 5. The wire from SWM modules port 1 is connected to the newly added repair terminal in GSM port 4 and the cable from SWM port 5 is connected to the repair terminal on GSMs port 5. Then you are done! Add the steering wheel, reinstall the center console and take it for a test drive :) Put your car in Sport and click either paddle and see if it works!

This guide should work for any Volvo from 2011 and onward I believe (not SPA/CMA). If you have this rectangular gear knob (2011-2012) you will have to swap out the shifter assembly to a 2013+. If you have a SPA/CMA car you just need a steering wheel with paddle shifters and then activate paddle shifters with VDASH or at a Volvo dealer.
