Hi all can some one translate this report into layman's terms is it a big job?

ECM=P229100 means that the Engine Control Module is saying that fuel pressure is too low, despite the pressure control valve having been signalled to fully open. The dealer is saying that they checked the fuel pressure sensor that reports the pressure to the ECM and found it to be working correctly, indicating that the report of low pressure in the system is probably correct rather than being a faulty sensor signal, but that they have found that the pressure control valve won't open fully, or more than 20%. Thus they believe that to be the cause of the low pressure detected.

They are recommending that your Engine Control Module is flashed to the latest software update available, and that the fuel pressure control valve is then replaced.

Is this the D4162T diesel engine? I'm not overly familiar with it, but looking at VIDA the control valve is attached to the fuel pump, which has to be removed to access and replace it. Removal of the pump from the block itself is fairly straightforward, but it appears to be necessary to remove the engine induction pipe assembly and timing belt to then remove the toothed wheel that drives the pump, which is driven from the timing belt, before the pump can be removed from the opposite side of the web on the engine block. If that is the case, you will have to have the timing belt replaced as well as removal of the pump and replacement of the control valve attached to it.

The TJ quoted is a technical journal, which are documents circulated by Volvo to their dealers advising them of issues and other information that the manufacturer has become aware of, not covered in the normal workshop repair information. Some of these documents relate to recall actions. Others may just advise of issues that have come to light through the dealer network, advising the technicians of a likely cause and how to confirm it, and the remedial action required.

We as customers are not allowed access to the technical journals in the UK or Europe. But in the US, consumer legislation requires them to be published and freely available. Unfortunately, I can't find any trace of TJ 27325 on the NHTSA list, probably because this engine is not used in North American vehicles. So it is impossible to tell exactly what it says, other than that according to your dealer's report, it recommends replacement of the high pressure pump control valve.

The mechanical work could be done by any competent garage but not the ECM update unless you used an independent Volvo specialist. As you have already paid for Volvo diagnostics and will be getting genuine Volvo parts with the warranty that entails, I don't think the price quoted is too bad for the work involved.
