V40 D4 CC and check engine light...

Two days ago the Check engine light came on while driving. I took the car to the local Volvo dealer - (the light went off on the way but I took the car to be checked anyway). Now...the dealer was quick to say that the EGR valve would need replacement, along with some hoses if the warning comes on again. They quoted me 1650 EUR...Mind blowing...Just as quick they offered to write to Volvo HQ...get some sort of discount and do the job for half price. This whole situation sounds fishy to me...I have seen this tactic used before so many times...and not just by unscrupulous garages...
Now - did anyone have to change the EGR valve + associated hoses? What is the cost of the parts (without labor)?
I did a quick search online and there are more stories than I would like to see on this topic. Did Volvo acknowledge the issue? Was there a recall on it?

The car is a V40 CC D4, MY2014 (the 190 HP engine) and not covered by warranty anymore...:crying:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My MY15 D4 had this exact problem but was covered by warranty at the time. They took it into the dealership without any fuss, had the EGR valve replaced, coolant drained and replaced and a software update to the ECU.

Seemingly this is a common problem with the D4 VEA engine and after those fixes the problem never returned.

Because it's a well-known issue, I suggest you get in contact with Volvo Customer Service first and explain the situation with the dealership and see if they are willing to take the lead.

Hello everyone.
My mame si Aurelian and i have bought a volvo V40 D4 (Date of first registration 29.12.2014) a few days ago with quite alot of km on board (~190 000).
I drove for aprox. 500km and now the check engine linght appear on the board.
I have tested the car at the begining and nothing appeared on the tester.
Do you think that could be the same issue as Florin has?
Can I drive with this issue 2-3 days until I can go to Volvo dealer?

Thank you in advance.

As Bounce mentioned - it won't be a problem if you drive the care a few more days (I know I did drive it until the parts arrived) - with no obvious issues - no loss of power or anything else. The fix is free from Volvo - you may have to stand your ground if the dealer wants to charge you (assuming this is the problem).

I thought I may have avoided the EGR fault as my V40 CC D3 is MY17. Sadly light came on a couple of weeks ago, cleared it with phone, but came on again after a week, took it in to local dealer today and sorted in a couple of hours with new EGR, cooler and hoses. Hopefully there are no issues with the new one, only had the car just over a month.

Hi guys today after about an hours worth of driving the dreaded check engine light has come on.
If it's the egr and hose problem how have people managed to get a free fix.
My car is the v40 d4 64reg

Hi I’ve just bought a 15plate v40 d2, had it back at garage 3 times, they’ve now told me they’ll replace egr, just a bit concerned if they don’t change pipe work, the problem will arise again.

I called at volvo they offered a free eger plus pipe work plus software update.
I refused this free fix and chose to have the egr deleted from the system and a remap.
I would still have the work done, you can then have the egr delete if you want.
I had an EGR delete on another vehicle, different engine, but the engine ran very hot because EGR cools the combustion and the rest of the system didn't seem to like it.
the VEA engine is a very recent engine so was designed around EGR function. Hopefully a delete might work but I would go for belt and braces just in case.

Hi guys I have got the engine check light on on my 15 d4 but has no warranty are Volvo still fixing these for free as I haven’t had a problem for the first year I owned mine but a month after it came out of Volvo main dealer for a service and some soft wear updates and sensors being cleaned the light has been on and off just been told it’s going to cost £99 just to look at the car

The EGR can be cleaned using the likes of diptane fuel treatment and gets rid of this issue, and another fault that comes up is for the INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR and MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR

Try this boost drive car heavy UP FIVE gears and let off if, reduce engine performance comes up its a sensor, bumps in the road and hills trigger it also

you can buy cheap obd2 reader and plug in while driving generic codes are online for this problem

P0127 sensor replacement needed IAT
U0301 sensor replacement needed MAF
