Door Locking

I had noticed on my V40 that on occasion the driver's door wouldn't open at the end of a journey until I had unlocked all doors, so I decided to experiment.

At the end of a journey a few days ago I stopped and turned engine off. Then I pulled the door handle towards me, and unlocked then locked the doors. At that point I was deadlocked in on the driver's side.

I unlocked all the doors, but couldn't get the driver's door to open. No matter what I did, I was locked in. The other doors could open OK. I restarted the engine, unlocked again, even opened the window but the door couldn't be opened from outside either!
I played with all the settings in My Car regarding security and arming the door locks and alarm, to no avail.

I ended up getting out the passenger door.

The next day the doors were back to normal and since then my door opens even if the rest are locked, but what happened was strange. Can someone else try the above to see if it's a generic problem or just something I need to get looked at?

many thanks

I had the same problem with N/S/R door, and yes the next morning it was back to normal, very strange but frustrating at the time with grandchildren in the back.

when the doors are automatically locked, it is not possible to open the front passenger door without having to unlock all doors from the driver's door.
Not possible in ours as far as I could see. Noticed this for the first time on the same day as your post :)
should it be like this?
Not, IMHO but is. Overkill on safety?

replaced already 3 times

Hi, I've a V40 Cross Country dated april/2013. I've had a similar problem multiple times. First with the rear/left door which, at the end of the journey occasionally could not be opened, neither form inside nor outside, even after repeatedly pressing the unlock button. usually after one or two days it "unlocked" itself and could be opened again.
My service shop replaced the lock mechanism once, then the problem started again after 4-5 months and replaced it again.
Now I've the same problem on the driver door, though this time if I press the unlock button the door can be opened, and they are replacing the lock mechanism again.
I asked the get it replaced on all four doors, but they said this is not a "known defect" so they cannot replace it under warranty.
What does it take to make it a known defetct?

Who knows, I had to go very high before Volvo did the recall re no km/h reading in the TFT display lays year.

Then the bumper pealing fiasco, again it took several months for Volvo to admit there was an issue and replace under warranty (with bumpers that don't match)

Then there is the smearing drivers windscreen wiper, 12 months and 4 set of wipers later Volvo admit there is a design fault effecting some cars and there is no fix for it (but changing the wiper arm seems yo have helped on mine...touch wood)

I've had the same thing crop up on my front passenger door in the last month...for love nor money you can't open it from the inside or outside and the strangely after a few hours, it works again! I don't know if it's electrical or mechanical, but the car is going in next week to have it sorted. Darren

Well that sounds nice... I live in a small town in middle England, and someone got hit on the head with a hammer on the way to their car. So out of character for this area! Least we don't have (many) guns!

This has been going off for over a year, BMW were supposed to have updated their system (cars updated at next service if it goes to the main dealer?)

There has been a large number of mk2 facelift focus ST's stolen, apparently in this manner.

Having said that if they really want the car they will still get it, previously it meant the thief would break in to your house and nick your keys (possibly beetling you up at the same time) so whilst not ideal it could be argued this is 'safer'.

And regardless of what type of key it has it will not stop them from sticking it on the back of the truck as what happened with the A3 black edition on the firms fleet (seen on CCTV)

Yes, it's a warranty fix.

I had both of my rear doors done, took about an hour.

I've had this problem with my rear passenger door in the past (had the lock replaced - it happened just before my first planned service). Recently it happened to my front passenger door too so will be making another trip to the dealership.

I think its related to how the normal lock interacts with the deadlock - when I have the problem, I can solve it by locking the car with the fob and waiting for the deadlock to kick in a few seconds later, after that, unlocking the car with the fob returns everything to normal. Likely related issue I've had recently is that my front passenger door seems to be operating in child-lock mode, only unlocking when I press the drivers side button.

Surely if you have 2 locks replace they should replace them all as clearly there is an issue rather than trying to beat the expiry of the warranty.

Vovlo charge about ÂŁ300 to replace a door lock, I got a bill on a fleet car (only 18month old but done silly miles so out of warranty, tight Volvo has a poor warranty, most marques are unlimited mileage for the first 2 years) I kicked off saying it was a latent defect and known issue and has nothing to do with the mileage the car has done (motorway miles on a long commute) they then agreed to refund

I had a faulty rear door that would not unlock.
Replacement parts fitted under warranty, also new inner door panel replaced due to damage getting to the lock.
About time there should be some quick fit to release the lock from the inside of the car.

Rear offside door lock problem

This week my d2 v40 2013 model , has developed a fault. The door will simply not open from inside or outside. I had a car full during a hospital visit, 3 elderly patients were in the car and we struggled to get an 87 yr old out of the car having to get him to edge his way over the rear seat. In a low slung v40 it was no joke. I emailed Volvo uk over the weekend and they seemed to be unaware of a problem, I spoke with hatfields bury today and they state Volvo uk have a policy action in that Volvo have agreed to sort out this apparent lock problem fo an additional year (yr4) . Shame on Volvo for not coming clean on this !!!!!. Has anyone experienced a similar problem ?

You have found this thread - a lot of owners have had this problem on V40s from the first 12-18 months of production due to a defective batch of central locking actuators. Volvo UK are unsurpisingly trying to flannel you by saying they know nothing, as it meant they have to pay for the parts (usually including a new door card, as it needs to have a hole cut in it to release the actuator so the door can be opened) and labour to repair it under warranty. fortunately your dealer has owned up that it's an extended warranty issue.

I have a feeling if it was a different manufacturer, or more widespread, there would be more fuss made. It's actually quite shocking when you realise you are locked inside the car - if one door is locked and can't be opened from in or out, what if the rest were too?

This has now happened to me twice.

Makes you wonder what would happen if there was a side impact on the side that opens still, how would you get out the car if the undamaged side doesn't open.
This is a serious safety issue and I would think a definite mot failure, hard to believe a so called safety minded company like volvo won't just fix it for free without question.

WTF Volvo??!! Bloody disgraceful!!
The ONLY saving grace is Volvo via your dealer sorting it under "extended warranty"
Which is basically the recall you are having when you are not having a recall... Claytons anyone?!

volvo we have a problem

There was a time when the car completely locked you out, we had such a car and it was grim, what is it with Volvo door locks, at ÂŁ300 a pop when the guarantee is up, watch out s/h car buyers as ill bet after sales warrantees wont cover that, this really has to be a safety issue as its dragged on over the 2.5 years I have followed this forum, with Volvo really dragging their heals, they have a problem in their quality control, is it now sorted and these instances are from cars that have not had the rear doors used much but now have different owners Volvo need to remember one bad news story can trash a reputation built up over many years. even unlimited cover on door locks still doesn't help if your stuck in a bad place and find you cant get out of the car,:mad:

I have the same problem as well, I have asked different Volvo dealers, as I bought a S/H V40, 2013 D3, the rear driver's side door has same problem.

The local dealer says volvo will cover 50% of thet costs to repair it, and the other dealer further away is saying similar things, could this be an argueable case?

At the point of purchase the V40 had no door problems at all, but then it just came on after few days, I guess I was unlucky then.

My car also comes with RAC Gold warranty which covers door lock and I have booked it in with a local Volvo specialist to see what they can do.

I am waiting to see what they can do and if not I probably have to go back to the Volvo dealer to get it sorted.

My local volvo dealer is quoting around ÂŁ264 for two doors incl labour and parts.

I have just had a rear driver's side door lock motor replaced at Marshall Cambridge for the second time (first was January 2015) under warranty without any quibble whatsoever, the car is 40 months old. On both occasions door would not unlock .I do not however understand Buzby's point about damage to the door trim as the dealer told me their mechanics/technicians can simply remove the inner door trim while the door remains locked, I cannot detect that they have fitted any new interior trim parts. It cannot be a big job as the car was ready for collection, after complimentary "health check", four-wheel alignment and interior clean/exterior wash in less than three hours.!

Had one of my rear locks changed under warranty, which also included some part of the door trim, as when I rang to check on progress, they were waiting delivery of the door trim.
They may order door trims at the same time as the locks now !

The second rear door lock has failed on my 2013 v40 R Design. The first lock failed on the 12/12/2016 and was fixed on the 22/12/2016.When the car was returned
to me the dealers had fitted a second hand door card that was in very good condition.I noticed that it is a different design to the old one. There was a fixing screw inside the door post which has now been removed as if you cannot open the door you cannot get the door card off without damaging it.This shows that Volvo do have a major fault and safety issue with this car.I have only done 800 miles since the first problem and the car is still under warranty.
