It appears my "new" 2012 V40 that I picked up a few days ago hasn't had the necessary software installed to allow maps to be installed via USB stick, as I get a message asking for a licence key. Is there any way round this, rather than returning to the dealer for a software update (a 180 mile round trip) ? Can you just ask for a licence key that you can type in instead ? Alternatively, could I just update by dvd every time ?
The navigation application that runs on the IAM needs to be updated to allow maps to be loaded via USB. The update can only be downloaded from Volvo's server by a dealer or approved independent with a full VIDA subscription.
Navteq/HERE (Volvo's Nav data supplier) stopped producing DVD updates completely in 2015, which is why the IAM updates had to be developed for pre-MCA cars so they could still receive map updates. I don't think they even have the ability to generate licence keys for newer editions of the map data.
The DVD updates were not free either - they came as a set of DVDs (which cost about £50) and the licence key (which cost about £120). The DVD were useless without the key, and the key was hashed to the car's VIN and the map version, so it was only valid for one vehicle and one map edition.. The IAM software update to allow USB updates costs less than a set of DVDs did.
Have you not got a Volvo dealer any closer than 180 miles? It doesn't need to be the supplying dealer (it's not a free update, though if you have just bought the car from a Volvo dealer I would have asked for them to update it as part of the sale).
