Hi, i have a Volvo V40 2013/14 with navigation system.
Where to find the latest map for Europe? There is a 2016 version and a 2017-18 version to download at Volvo ... wil both work?
No. There are 2 versions of navigation system fitted to V40s. From it's introduction in MY13 to MY14.5 it has Sensus RTI system. This system used DVD updates originally (though dealers could download maps via USB, as they had the facility to generate licence keys), but HERE (who produce the map data) wanted to stop producing update DVDs. To continue support for this system Volvo released an updated version of the IAM software in Week 22 of 2016 to allow USB updates without needing a licence key. As long as you have had the IAM software update that adds the feature downloaded to the car at a dealer using VIDA. The latest maps for this system are version V.30.16.04, published 30/05/2016

From MY14.5 onwards (i.e. cars built after 2013 Week 46) the software architecture for the IAM was changed to introduce Sensus Connect (known as MCA). These have an additional button on the console (a 'globe' on the opposite side to the NAV button). The MCA architecture had licence-free USB updates from the start. The latest maps for this system are version 31676528, published 29/09/2017.

If your car is from 2013 I expect it will have the Sensus RTI system, in which case you will probably need to go to a dealer to get the Week 22 2016 version of the IAM software downloaded before you can use the V.30.16.04 map download.

Hello,

I live near Lisbon in Portugal. I own a MY13 and I love the car, but I can't seem to get TMC traffic warnings to work.
I have the latest maps version (the one from May 2016 with USB updates), but the traffic info settings have always been greyed out. Shouldn't a car with the 7" screen media system be able to receive traffic updates?

Here's what I have:

"Traffic events ahead" and "Avoided traffic events" greyed out when a route has been selected:

No traffic station appears under "Current traffic station":

Updated maps and software:

What could be the reason for this? It sucks that sometimes I'm driving home and there's a traffic jam due to an accident and I drive straight into it because there's no warning :(

I know TMC is not near as good as an actual internet connection with live updates, but it would be better than having nothing at all.

Volvo's literature for the Navigation system states that TMC is only available in certain markets (the car manufacturer has to pay a licence fee to the TMC data broadcaster in each country for every car sold). From your experience it would appear Portugal is one of the markets where Volvo haven't paid for access to it.

It appears my "new" 2012 V40 that I picked up a few days ago hasn't had the necessary software installed to allow maps to be installed via USB stick, as I get a message asking for a licence key. Is there any way round this, rather than returning to the dealer for a software update (a 180 mile round trip) ? Can you just ask for a licence key that you can type in instead ? Alternatively, could I just update by dvd every time ?

The navigation application that runs on the IAM needs to be updated to allow maps to be loaded via USB. The update can only be downloaded from Volvo's server by a dealer or approved independent with a full VIDA subscription.

Navteq/HERE (Volvo's Nav data supplier) stopped producing DVD updates completely in 2015, which is why the IAM updates had to be developed for pre-MCA cars so they could still receive map updates. I don't think they even have the ability to generate licence keys for newer editions of the map data.

The DVD updates were not free either - they came as a set of DVDs (which cost about £50) and the licence key (which cost about £120). The DVD were useless without the key, and the key was hashed to the car's VIN and the map version, so it was only valid for one vehicle and one map edition.. The IAM software update to allow USB updates costs less than a set of DVDs did.

Have you not got a Volvo dealer any closer than 180 miles? It doesn't need to be the supplying dealer (it's not a free update, though if you have just bought the car from a Volvo dealer I would have asked for them to update it as part of the sale).

I did ask them to update the sat nav before I picked the car up, but it was one of the things they didn't do. Not very impressive for a main dealer to say the least. They said I could easily do it myself and as I had already waited 2 hours for the other jobs to be done, I took their word for it.
There are other dealers much closer, but I object to having to pay for something that should have already been done. I assume it wouldn't be covered by the Selekt warranty, but I will ask.

Hi Graham,

Map updates will not be covered by the Selekt Warranty. However, if you asked the dealer to upgrade the maps and they agreed to do so, then they should do it, even if this means they have to pay for a software update.

I would call the supplying dealer, explain the problem and propose that you take the car to the nearest dealer to have the software update to facilitate USB map updates. The local dealer can then arrange for payment from the supplying dealer (main dealers tend to have accounts with each other).

Hi TW,
The dealer is going to add the software and the latest maps. They have another branch more local to me, but they are booked up for a while, so I am going back to the dealer who will cover the cost of fuel and give me a loan car for the morning. Not an ideal outcome, but better than I was expecting.
They are also adding the Lighting Logic upgrade, so not all bad !

Pros: the front and rear position lights and number plate lights come on with the DRLs.
Cons: You can no longer tell when the headlights are on in 'Auto' mode as the LED above the knob on the light switch module is lit constantly.

If you have the LCD instrument cluster, check to see if you can enable the auxilliary 'kmh' speed display. Most V40s built in the first 6 months with the LCD dash don't have the option and required a DIM firmware update to add it. If yours hasn't got it, ask them to do it while they have got it hooked up to VIDA.

I'm not overly bothered about the led as I find it awkward to look at anyway. I will ask about the kmh display though

Hello, I am trying to update the maps on my V40 (15reg plate).
I've tried formatting my USB drive on FAT32 but now the car will pop a message saying "USB unreadable"
When you download the maps, they are stored in the "Sensus Update MCA (Europe)" folder. Does the folder need to be stored in the usb as it is, or do you have to copy the contents in the USB?

Thanks!

Can't recall the exact process, but the download web page tells you what to do.

My 32GB SD card has 6 files plus 2 folders (HDD2 and HDD3). Not in any containing folder.
